Blog's purpose

My blog's purpose is to explain how each basic computer part helps the computer and which parts to by to make your own computer.

Some things to consider:

Budget - The computer parts I'm going to use will only save you money for budgets $800+. There are lots of competitively price computers that are less than $600 that are worth the price.

Risk - If you follow these instructions, you should be alright, but there's always the risk of ending up with a $1000 piece of junk with no store to return it to.

If this still hasn't discouraged you then you are in the right place. Happy building.

A note about 'bottle necking'

If you have been looking into making a computer sooner or later you will see the term 'bottle neck'. A bottle neck is when one part of the computer vastly overpowers another. This is bad because your computer will have to limit parts to stay in sync.

It would be like owning a truck that could pull 10,000 pounds and only having a four foot trailer, even though your truck could pull a twenty foot trailer fully loaded, you can only load it with what you can fit in the four foot trailer. The trailer limits your truck and makes all of its extra towing capacity go to waste.

So when building a computer, remember to spread your money evenly. If your budget is $500 don't blow $200 on a processor, because you won't have enough left to buy parts that match its quality.

CPU

The CPU is one of the most important parts of your computer. It is handles instructions from programs and does the basic arithmetic, logic, and input/output processes and is considered 'the brain' of the computer. The two major CPU companies are AMD and Intel. Right now Intel seems to be two steps ahead of AMD with its new i-series and the i5 2500k has the best price/performance ratio on the market at the moment. Each month, tomshardware.com has an article for best CPUs for the money.

When handling the CPU, always wear an ESD bracelet. This bracelet will ground you so you don't fry your processor.
